Emerging Markets: Developing Bertelsmann’s business presence in growth regions

29. Oktober 2014 @ 14:03 · Abgelegt unter -
Nǐ hǎo, Namaste, Bom dia!

My name is Markus Leyendecker and I am a Bachelor’s student of Business Administration at the University of St. Gallen. In addition, I have spent the past year at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to study liberal arts. I have decided on an internship in Bertelsmann’s Emerging Markets team to get to know the international media and services group as well as to gain practical experience in corporate development.

Emerging Markets is part of the Corporate Center in Gütersloh, Bertelsmann’s global headquarters. The department focuses on one of the four pillars of the group strategy – the expansion of business activities in the defined growth regions of Brazil, India and China. In doing so, the team supports both the activities of the Corporate Centers in São Paulo, New Delhi and Beijing, as well as the strategic investments in the new business areas of digital media and education in the BIC countries.
As part of my internship I have supported the compilation of documents regarding Bertelsmann’s emerging markets strategy for the senior management. Furthermore, I have analyzed the development of Bertelsmann’s core businesses in Brazil, India and China as well as of the portfolio of the Bertelsmann Asia Investments (BAI) fund. Finally, I have assisted the preparation of investment projects by critically assessing digital business models and new market segments.

I would like to emphasize the amazing working atmosphere in my team. Right from the beginning I have been involved in current projects, quickly received my own tasks and responsibilities, and was always encouraged to bring in my thoughts and ideas. Additionally, I receive extensive feedback regarding my work and my interpersonal skills. Through this coaching I have the opportunity to not only improve my performance, but also to continuously grow as a person. The colleagues in my team and beyond are always open to questions and I have made great friends within the intern community, which meets for lectures as well as regular pub nights and other social activities.

My internship in the Emerging Markets team has exceeded all my expectations, and does not only pose a daily challenge, but is also a lot of fun. I fully recommend an internship in this department to anyone who is passionate about strategic questions related to emerging markets and media.
